Background
Historically, energy consumed by electric trains for both motive power and hotel loads has been charged on a modelled billing arrangement, colloquially known as EC4T.
Moving to metered billing is analogous to fitting a water meter at home. By paying for only what you consume incentivises the user to adopt a more energy efficient mindset. This can be achieved through best practice driving styles as well as reducing the energy consumed by trains at depots and at stabling points. Excessive energy usage may also be an indication of an on-train traction fault.
Energyx - The Solution
AtkinsRéalis has developed an end to end energy metering solution which has our Energyx software at the heart of the process.
The end to end process includes the fitment of energy meters to the trains, the transmission of the recorded data, processing of the energy metering files at the “On Ground Stage” solution (Energyx) and then transmission of compliant billing files to Network Rail’s agent EnergyICT.

Your Energyx Interface
Energyx is the user interface that allows the viewing of energy metering information over the internet. The application is part of clyx.net® and is easy to use, intuitive and is feature rich.
- Ability to graph various energy metering data channels & to view metered results on Bing Maps.
- Alerting capability by email.
- Automatic transmission of compliant billing files to Network Rail.
- Automatic importation of service/driver data (if supplied).
- Provides estimated energy costs by a range of time periods.
- A range of standard reports such as: Data Warehouse, Infill Percentage & Data Quality.
- Ability to search any fleet, class, unit, vehicle or meter & export data in CSV or XML format.
- Ability to define train maintenance periods and define regular train stand-down periods.
