ATOC Engineering provides the focus, represents and facilitates for the UK passenger train operators on a number of issues such as performance, technical and sustainability. The public part of our website shares general information, including our publications and details of our graduate engineer programme. The members’ section provides a forum for staff in ATOC companies and associated organisations to share technical knowledge.
The work of ATOC Engineering is directed by the ATOC Engineering Council.
Our main tasks are:
- to spread engineering best practice among ATOC companies
- to represent our members to government, safety authorities and other rail industry organisations in UK and Europe
- developing industry strategy, shaping research programmes and defining technical standards are key activities in which we take part on behalf of ATOC member companies

APED Scheme - Training Tomorrow’s Railway Engineers
The Association of Train Operating Companies offers a Professional Engineering Development Scheme, accredited by the IMechE and IET.
Successful trainees will be employed in individual Train Operating Companies and can expect training to provide a comprehensive and direct route to becoming a fully qualified Engineer.
The railway industry offers significant challenges and a lifetime of interest for mechanical and electrical engineering graduates.
